Wildlife Disaster Network Mobilizes Aid for Burned, Injured Wildlife

In wildfire-beleaguered ��Ƶ, firefighters and emergency personnel race to help humans, livestock and neighborhoods across the state, year after year. Now, a new network is being created to help treat injured individuals from an overlooked population — wildlife.

The Wildlife Disaster Network is a partnership between the ��Ƶ, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine and ��Ƶ Department of Fish and Wildlife. It aims to quickly and efficiently mobilize the people and resources needed to aid wildlife affected by wildfire and other disasters.

About 100 fellow ��Ƶ Highway Patrol officers and UC Davis Medical Center staff gave David Gordon a warm send-off as he headed back home to Yuba City last Friday (Feb. 21) after a four-month stay in the hospital. As Gorden walked past officers and members of his UC Davis care team, he and his wife were greeted with hugs, ear-to-ear smiles and rounds of applause and cheers. Gordon was hospitalized in October 2019 after being injured in the line of duty.

A 1965 musical focusing on a Great Depression-era tale of love and communism will begin a run at UC Davis later this month.

“Flora the Red Menace,” the first collaboration between the creators of “Cabaret” and “Chicago,” will be resurrected by the Department of Theatre and Dance. The musical by Tony Award-winners John Kander and Fred Ebb will be presented in the Wyatt Pavilion Theatre Feb. 28–March 9.

In the wake of massive wildfires that burned through the Sonoma and Napa areas last fall, Deana Clifford had a bad feeling.

“I feel like we’re going to get a burned animal,” said Clifford, who is a senior wildlife veterinarian with the ��Ƶ Department of Fish and Wildlife and an assistant clinical professor at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.
