Students Prepare for Undergraduate Research Conference

UC Davis student Natasha Bibbs of Sacramento has already gone places with academic research — and she hopes to go even further.

The fourth-year student travelled about 2,000 miles to Louisiana and more than 150 years back in time to discover how someone she believes is an ancestor — perhaps her great-great-grandfather — became one of the first Black doctors in his community and used his status to contribute to the African American community.

Internationally known for his signature blend of speed-painting iconic images, hip-hop dance, and inspirational speaking, Sacramentan David Garibaldi joined UC Davis Sacramento students and faculty recently to talk about arts, education and community.

“This past summer, we saw our world creating images that reflected how we felt, saying what we had no words for,” Garibaldi told the audience via Zoom. “Art has always been a voice for the unsaid.”

UC Davis starts the new academic year with two new leaders in the world of undergraduates: Cynthia Carter Ching as interim vice provost of Undergraduate Education, and Pablo G. Reguerín as vice chancellor of Student Affairs.

Mary Croughan, provost and executive vice chancellor at UC Davis, today (July 7) announced the appointment of Cynthia Carter Ching, a professor and associate dean in the School of Education, to serve as interim vice provost and dean of Undergraduate Education.

She will take up her new post July 15, following the departure of Carolyn Thomas, who was recently appointed provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at ��Ƶ State University, Fullerton, Thomas’ alma mater.
