Showcase of ideas on strategic sourcing

The Financial Sustainability Action Plan’s first Exploration Committee invites everyone at UC Davis to tour a showcase of strategic sourcing ideas that could generate millions of dollars annually for investment in the university’s core mission.

The committee encourages feedback. The showcase is available online (with a series of one-minute videos), and will be the subject of a forum (with refreshments) this Friday morning (Jan. 15). See details below.

Aliso Canyon methane leak emissions sky-high, UC Davis pilot scientist found

A UC Davis scientist flying in a pollution-detecting airplane provided the first, and so far only, estimates of methane emissions spewing from the Aliso Canyon Natural Gas Storage Facility in Southern ��Ƶ since the leak began on Oct. 23, 2015.

The search for a vice provost of Graduation Education/dean of Graduate Studies, which began last academic year, is continuing. Several finalists came to the campus last spring, but, unfortunately, that first round did not lead to a successful recruitment.

The recruitment advisory committee interviewed additional candidates during fall quarter, and the campus is inviting one candidate for a campus visit on Thursday-Friday, Jan. 14-15.

Reddi named a fellow of National Academy of Inventors

UC Davis has a new “fellow” in the National Academy of Inventors: A. Hari Reddi, distinguished professor of orthopedics, a pioneer in the field of bone and cartilage regeneration and tissue engineering.

WINTER ARTS: For our cultural senses

A new quarter at UC Davis brings a calendar filled to the brim, as always, with new museum and art exhibitions (two are already open), music, theater and dance, and literary events for our cultural senses.

Programs include Shinkoskey Noon Concerts (they’re held most every Thursday, starting this week, and they’re free); the Betty Jean and Wayne Thiebaud Endowed Lecture in art; Romeo and Juliet; the musical Urinetown by the student troupe Studio 301; readings by novelists and poets; and book chats with faculty authors.

Annual 'Beer for a Butterfly' contest kicks off

Over more than four decades of running his annual Beer for a Butterfly Contest, Professor Art Shapiro hasn’t had to buy many pitchers for anyone but himself.

The beer (or its equivalent) is for whomever catches the first cabbage white butterfly of the year in Yolo, Solano or Sacramento counties.
