A Student’s Journey to Bridge Plants, People and the Planet

Last fall, a cohort of UC Davis undergraduate students took part in Plants, People and the Planet, as part of Quarter at Aggie Square. This experience allows students to contribute to community-based initiatives that promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to agriculture, environmental conservation, and the development of resilient ecosystems, especially those in the Sacramento region.

Aggie Square Showcases Connections

The bonds built over eight years of planning and construction were on full display last week when hundreds gathered to celebrate Aggie Square opening its doors to the public.

The innovation district that blends public, university and private industry spaces to encourage collaboration opened Friday (May 2), welcoming attendees with displays showing work already underway and encouraging them to envision future uses for the 767,000-square-foot development.

When a researcher at UC Davis needs a tool that doesn’t exist, they often turn to Tech Foundry, a facility that uses 3D printers, CNC machines and laser cutters to create one-of-a-kind devices and prototypes.

The development facility, known previously as the TEAM Lab, is operated by the Department of Biomedical Engineering and has had a location in Davis for more than 15 years, and is now in the process of opening a second space in Aggie Square.

Connect Labs Sacramento, located at Aggie Square, opened a facility in March designed to support early-stage startups in digital, life science and health sectors.

The 50,000-square-foot space features pre-built and furnished labs, office and support spaces with a curated set of amenities, services and shared equipment for emerging and growth companies.
